RAKING a shipRAKING a ship, the act of cannonading a ship on the stern, or head, so as that the balls shall scour the whole length of her decks; which is one of the most dangerous incidents that can happen. in a naval action. This is frequently called raking fore and aft, being the same with what is called enfilading by engineers.
