To RAISE

To RAISE, to elevate any distant object at sea, by a gradual approach towards it from the place whence it was formerly observed. This effect is known to be occasioned by the convexity of the surface of the lea, which previously intercepted the view, when directed towards the lower parts of the laid object. This term is opposed to LAYING, which see.
